Online guides: Lost or stolen driving licence

If your driving licence or car registration document is lost, stolen or destroyed, you have to report it to the police within 48 hours. They will issue a temporary driving certificate.

To get a new driving licence, you must bring two photos and an identity document. If you do not receive a copy of your driving licence within 45 days, you can ask for information to the toll-free number 800-232323 of the Ministry of Transport.

In specific cases, such as when your driving licence is damaged, you cannot follow the simplified procedure, but you have to address to the government office that issues driving licences and registers vehicles (Motorizzazione civile).

Remember your driving licence validity is liable to revision:category B has a ten-year validity period for drivers up to 50 years; a five-year validity period for drivers from 50 to 70, while revision is compulsory every three years fordrivers older than 70.
Driving with an expired driving licence entails the suspension of your driving document and a fine.
