Born on 19th May 1986 in Ferrara, Mirco grew up in Bologna. He took up swimming aged 5, encouraged by his parents, like many other kids. Soon he showed his talent and results came quickly.

He grew up competing for the club "Azzurra 91" in Bologna, and joined the police sports group "Fiamme Oro" in 2005.

His first important result came in 1995 when he won the UISP Italian Championships at the age of 9. It was the first of a long series of achievements, as Mirco has become the fastest Italian backstroke swimmer, currently holding the Italian record in the 50 and 100-meters backstroke.

Mirko represented Italy at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 100m backstroke and in the 4x100 medley relay always swimming the backstroke.

He has qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
