The 6th European Police Chiefs convention started in The Hague yesterday. This year the Police top ranks discussed issues pertaining to terrorism, migration and the impact of new digital technologies.

The European Police Chiefs convention organized by Europol is an opportunity for law enforcement partners from EU Member States to strengthen relations and discuss criminal issues. In particular the debate will focus on how to implement joint strategies to combat them.

The Italian police Chief Franco Gabrielli delivered his speech on immigration during the plenary session also attended by a number of partner countries.

In his speech Prefect Gabrielli gave an overview of EU initiatives on migration management, stressing that “law enforcement cooperation has been strengthened at all levels, especially by providing Europol and Frontex with very effective tools.” He also said that “to dismantle criminal organizations involved in smuggling migrants and trafficking in human beings having ramifications in countries other than those of transit and final destination it is important to enhance cooperation with the main countries of origin and transit”. “Italy has been able to build relationships with some of those countries, yielding important results as far as investigations are concerned.”

On the sidelines of the conference, Prefect Gabrielli met his EU counterparts, representatives from some partner countries as well as the directors of Interpol and Europol.

Mr Gabrielli and Europol Director Rob Wainwright  took stock of the situation regarding several issues, including Europol supported operations involving Italy.
