Interpol: 1st meeting on asset seizure
Rome is the venue of the 1st Interpol meeting on criminal asset seizure. In particular, the "1st Meeting of the Group of Experts on identification, location and seizure of criminal assets" is being hosted at the National Police Academy, from May 14 to 16.
After a welcome speech by the Director of the Police Academy Roberto Sgalla, Police Chief Alessandro Pansa and his deputy Francesco Cirillo delivered their opening addresses. The discussion then focused on the instruments available to Interpol for asset recovery and the most effective investigation techniques.
One of the experts attending the Rome meeting is the Interpol Executive Committee delegate for Europe and Cagliari's Police Commissioner Filippo Dispenza.
The meeting will also focus on asset confiscation in foreign jurisdictions, including confiscation orders and sentencing tools. New forms of police cooperation through dedicated platforms, networks or operational channels will be among the topics of discussion.
The establishment of this Group of Experts results from a series of recommendations submitted by Italy and endorsed by Interpol's governing bodies with a view to strengthening international efforts to stamp out organized crime by targeting their crime proceeds.
Over 100 experts from around the world are attending the conference, together with representatives of international institutions and organizations such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the World Bank, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Europol, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the CARIN network, the Egmont Group and the UN 1267 Security Council Committee.
