On the occasion of the 83rd Interpol General Assembly, held from 7 to 9 November 2014 in Monaco, ICPO-Interpol celebrates 100 years of international police cooperation.

Deputy Police Chief Matteo Piantedosi attended the meeting on behalf of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, representing the Italian Chief of Police.

Prefect Piantedosi highlighted the crucial role played by Interpol in developing police cooperation and combating transnational crime and outlined the main points of the Italian Presidency programme.

He also mentioned the need to improve the mechanisms to monitor unlawful financial transactions, to trace and seize criminal proceeds, and focused on the fight against illegal immigration, which means tackling criminal organizations that exploit migrants and, at the same time, assisting the victims of human trafficking.

Another priority set by the Italian Presidency of the EU Council, he continued, is the fight against cybercrime, which is one of the most serious threats that must be addressed in the coming decades by strengthening research and training.

Deputy Police Chief Piantedosi also mentioned the fight against terrorism and, in particular, against the recent phenomenon of "foreign fighters". In this respect, he spoke of the need for implementing and using the available databases, accelerating the creation of a system for collecting data on passengers and also improving integration between the Schengen Information System and Interpol databases for a safer and more effective exchange of sensitive information.
