The common emergency number 112 will be launched also in Rome. The advisory commission established by Interior Minister Angelino Alfano within the Department of Public Security has decided today that the common emergency number 112 will start to be active in conjunction with the extraordinary Holy Year proclaimed by the Holy Father, which will begin on December 8, 2015.

Dialling 112, people in distress can reach the control rooms of Polizia di Stato, Carabinieri, Fire brigade and medical assistance.

The common emergency number will be implemented on November 1, 2015, in Rome; subsequently it will be available all over Lazio.

112, which will serve about 3 million residents in Rome only, in addition to those that will gather in town during extraordinary events, will make it possible to significantly increase the levels of efficiency and timeliness in response and assistance to the public, also thanks to the technological upgrading of the system.

The model adopted in Lazio will be the same as the one put in place in Lombardy, the most populated Italian region, which has recently received the 112 Award as outstanding European emergency call centre project, by EENA, the European Emergency Number Association.

The Interior Minister Angelino Alfano and the President of the Lazio's regional government Nicola Zingaretti will soon sign a memorandum of understanding regulating emergency call processing in the Lazio region.
